Co-Extrusion

Co-extrusion, or multi-layer extrusion, involves the process of layering or embedding multiple materials into a single extrusion. These complex tube constructions allow engineers to obtain the combined properties of multiple materials within a single tube. We have the ability to utilize up to four materials at the same time in any given extrusion.

We specialize in the following types of co-extrusion tubes:

  • Striping. The addition of radiopaque or colored stripes is commonly used to identify extrusions under fluoroscopy or in clinical environments. The variation or application of stripes may include changes in position around a tube, multiple stripes, embedded stripes, or transition stripes.
  • Tie-Layering. Tie layers are typically used as primers or adhesives for bonding two dissimilar materials. This type of co-extrusion is generally used for fluoropolymers and polyolefins where a highly chemical resistant material needs to be combined with elastomers.
  • Transition Extrusions. This specialized process varies the ratio of materials relative to each other over the length of the extrusion. This is typically used when different properties at the distal and proximal end of a tube are desired.
  • Multi-Durometer Extrusions. A special class of co-extrusion, multi-durometer extrusions change in hardness through the cross section and length of the extrusion. This extrusion is typically utilized in implantable catheters where specific lubricity, body softening, pressure, and stiffness performance is needed.
  • Over Extrusion /Jacket Extrusion. This process involves running an existing extrusion, mandrel, or wire through the head of the extruder to coat or jacket the tube. This can be done to add thin coatings to tubes and may involve running two extruders back to back.

All extrusions are manufactured in our ISO 13485 registered facility under quality systems developed to be compliant with the FDA’s Medical Device System Regulations 21 CFR Part 820.
